Stem Bark

The bark of Phyllanthus emblica is grey and light borwn-coloured. The bark flakes off in irregular scales.

Leaf

The leaves of Phyllanthus emblica grow opposite (distichous) on the stem.
The small branchlets bearing the leaves look like compound (pinnate) leaves.
The leaf is simple bright green-coloured above and paler beneath. The leaf is glabrous on both sides.
The leaves are subsessile.
The leaf of Phyllanthus emblica is 1.2-1.5 cm long and 3 mm wide. The shape of the blade is oblong, the apex is obtuse, the base is cordate and the margins are entire.

Flower

The flowers of Phyllanthus emblica are grouped in few-flowered and axillary cymes (below the leaves) on small branchlets.
Phyllanthus emblica is monoecious with usually the male flowers at the base of the branchlets and the female ones upper and fewer.
The flowers have no petals.
The female flowers have 6 green-coloured, obovate and 2 mm long tepals. The female flowers have 3 large and spreading stigmas.
The male flowers have 6 yellowish, obovate and 2 mm long tepals.
They have 3 connate and column-shaped stamens with elliptic anthers.
The flowers are fragrant.

Fruit

The fruit of Phyllanthus emblica is a subglobose drupe. The fruit is yellowish green-coloured and 2-3.5 cm across with 6 vertical furrows. It has a fleshy and juicy pulp and each fruit contains one stone.

Seed

The seeds of Phyllanthus emblica are enclosed within a hard and woody stone. Each stone contains usually 6 brown-coloured, shiny and trigonous seeds. The seed of Phyllanthus emblica is 5-6 mm long and 3-4 mm wide.

Human Uses

The branches are lopped and used as a green manure and they are said to correct excessively alkaline soils

Reforestation : "Phyllanthus emblica is planted in degraded woodland and open areas in a mix with various other species that all have the ability to grow fast; produce dense, weed-suppressing crowns; and attract seed-dispersing wildlife, particularly birds and bats".

The fermented liquor made from the fruit is used in jaundice, dyspepsia and cough.

The exudation from incisions on the fruit is used as an external application for eye inflammation.

The juice and powder of fruits and leaves are taken before the lunch and dinner to control blood sugar level. The leaves and fruits decoction are used for stomach and hair problems.

The leaf juice is given in vomiting.

The seeds are stomachic, antibilious and antiasthmatic. They are used for asthma, bronchitis, nausea, stomach troubles, biliousness.
The powder of seeds mixed with water is given orally to cure syphilis.
The seed decoction is given in urinary troubles and leucorrhea.
