Syzygium caryophyllatum

Syzygium caryophyllatum is a small evergreen tree, growing up to 6 m in height.

The bark of Syzygium caryophyllatum is grey in colour and smooth. 
The branchlets are subterete and glabrous.

The leaves of Syzygium caryophyllatum are simple, growing in an opposite and decussate arrangement. 
The petiole is less than 1cm long, canaliculate and glabrous. 
The leaves are 5 to 10 cm long and 1.5 to 4 cm wide. 
The leaf is obovate in shape, the apex is obtuse, the base is attenuate to acute and the margin is entire. 
There are many lateral nerves close, slender and prominent looped at the margin.

The inflorescences of Syzygium caryophyllatum are growing in terminal corymbose cymes. 
The flowers are bisexual. 
They are white in colour and 0.5 cm in size. 
The petals are calyptrate, with numerous stamens which bent inwards at the middle when in bud.

The fruits of Syzygium caryophyllatum are globose berries. 
The berry is crowned with the calyx lobes and it is glabrous. 
It is 0.5 cm across. 
The fruits are green, then pink and turn a deep purple or black colour at maturity. 
The fruits are edible.

The seed of Syzygium caryophyllatum is enclosed in the flesh of the berry.
It is about 0.5 cm across, light beige in colour.
It is composed of 2 half green spheres, protected in a shell.
