Flueggea leucopyrus

Flueggea leucopyrus is a thorny and deciduous shrub growing up to 4-5 m high. It is profusely branched and it has arrested (thorn-like) and stiff branchlets.
 

The bark of Flueggea leucopyrus is greyish-coloured, rough and longitudinally fissured.

The leaves of Flueggea leucopyrus grow alternately on the stem (spirally arranged).
The leaf is simple, bright green-coloured above and paler beneath. The leaf is coriaceous and glabrous on both sides.
The leaves have a 5 mm long petiole.
The leaf of Flueggea leucopyrus is 2-4 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide. The shape of the blade is obovate, the apex is rounded, the base is cuneate and the margins are entire.
The venation of the leaf is reticulate with a prominent midrib.

The flowers of Flueggea leucopyrus are grouped in axillary clusters (few-flowered cymes).
The flowers of Flueggea leucopyrus are unisexual (male and female flowers separated on the same individual).
The male flowers have a 3-4 mm pedicel and 5 tepals. The tepals are ovate, 1 cm long and 0.7 cm wide and yellowish-coloured.
The androecium is composed of 5 stamens. The filaments are 1.5 cm with small and globose anthers.
The female flowers have 5 ovate and 0.8 mm long tepals.
The styles are 0.7 mm long, connate at the base and with bifid stigmas. The ovary is ovoid, 0.5 cm across and 2-3-celled.
The flowers are fragrant.
 

The fruit of Flueggea leucopyrus is a subglobose berry. The fruit is 5 mm across, green turning white when ripe.

The seeds of Flueggea leucopyrus are crescent-shaped, 2.5 mm long and 1.5 mm wide. The seed is light brown-coloured and there are 3-4 seeds per fruit.
